Blood type frequencies in Albania

Our latest addition to Blood Type Frequencies by Country including the Rh Factor is Albania.

I am assuming that the O(+) on the top right hand is supposed to be AB- and that “Albaninas” stands for “Albanians”.

(See the study: Blood Group Distribution of ABO Antigens and Rhesus Blood Group System in theMacedonian and Albanian Population in the Republic of Macedonia)

Here is another study regarding blood type frequencies in Albania:

Among all donors 89.00% and 10.86% were D-positive and D-negative, respectively, while 0.14% (n=55) of the donors were found to be weak D-positive. Overall 45/55 samples (81.8%) were resolved by Tm-shift screening, showing that approximately 67% of the variant D alleles were weak D type 1, while weak D type 3 (9.1%) and weak D type 2 (3.6%) were less common. A novel c.932A>G (p.Y311C) variant was also found in the heterozygous state by direct sequencing.

This shows similar results to the first study.

(See the study: Distribution of Rhesus blood group antigens and weak D alleles in the population of Albania)

So what stands out?

11.63% of Albanians shown as blood type AB does. That is twice the estimate once given by Bloodbook.com. The estimates given for Macedonia also are way higher in rh negative frequencies than this study indicates.

We need more studies to confirm present data.
