Hazel eyes are due to a combination of Rayleigh scattering and a moderate amount of melanin in the iris’ anterior border layer. Hazel eyes often appear to shift in color from a brown to a green. Although hazel mostly consists of brown and green, the dominant color in the eye can either be brown/gold or green. This is how many people mistake hazel eyes to be amber and vice versa. This can sometimes produce a multicolored iris, i.e., an eye that is light brown/amber near the pupil and charcoal or dark green on the outer part of the iris (or vice versa) when observed in sunlight.
Definitions of the eye color hazel vary: it is sometimes considered to be synonymous with light brown or gold, as in the color of a hazelnut shell.
Around 18% of the US population and 5% of the world population have hazel eyes.
Central heterochromia is also an eye condition where there are two colors in the same iris; but the arrangement is concentric, rather than sectoral. The central (pupillary) zone of the iris is a different color than the mid-peripheral (ciliary) zone. Central heterochromia is more noticeable in irises containing low amounts of melanin.
Can’t get a photo to you, no place to uplift to, your email doesn’t support replies. This camera can’t find access here either. Also, being old on basic pension, my days of expensive tech are gone. So, the quality of shots on phone are not as good as those on your eye chart. I took one though and it awaits a place of upload. Though listed as hazel, my eyes are three separate colours none running into, or overlapping the other. From outside in they’re grey, green, brown, iris. I’d never really realised they’re odd untill my ex (Asperger) husband had to be told firmly by me to “sit still and look me in the eyes as you speak!” Because 24 years of the back of his head finally wore me out in 1999. He sat staring, in childlike obedience, shaken by my rare show of anger. Then, after l’d said my piece he said, “Your eyes are three different colours, all separate rings!” He hadn’t heard a word, merely left me an enigma, as if he hadn’t been my biggest challenge! Like you would, l went to the mirror, as he headed to his garden shed. And instead of my usual fast snap view of mixed hazel eyes, l stared hard, and he was right, they are separate rings. He finally looks deep into my eyes, and left me with an enigma after our divorce in 2000. My six children are five in their fifties, one rising his fortieth year. My children’s eyes are, two brilliant blue, so amazing, they stun people, it’s always the first thing people say about them, what amazing blue eyes they have. Two with dark muddy brown eyes, which are compelling to look into. One has true hazel eyes like those you speak of here, their colours run into each other, and are only two. And one child has brilliant green eyes like the sea. Like her late dad’s, my first late husband. Why l have weird eyes is anybodies guess, but take it from a wide eyed Asperger male ex husband, verified by me, the owner of them, l do.
